Jose Julio has created his own air hockey-playing robot from scratch using 3D printer parts, materials in his house and some ingenuity.

Julio explained that his daughter loves air hockey and wanted someone to play against. This set off a creative spark in Julio's head, who enjoys messing around with robotics. He constructed an air hockey table and set about developing a robot, which would use his own software so that it would implement new commands immediately and move to a new position as quickly as possible.

The robot uses a PlayStation 3 Eye connected to a PC to see. The software records a video on the PC, which Julio finds useful for debugging.

Julio took a couple of things into consideration when undertaking the project. The robot can be removed from the table; it's easy to adjust the level of the robot; it's possible to mount two robots on the table, so Julio is hoping that competitions may be a possibility; and the project is reproducible, so you can make your own.
