Roller blades reinvented the roller skate, and now ACTION R RocketSkates could trump them both, offering a walkability for stairs and steep inclines. What's more, they're right in step with Smart technology, able to wirelessly communicate with each other and your smartphone, although they don't require a third party remote.

Unlike the skates of yesterday, the strap-in design allows for wear with almost any shoe and the Kickstarter campaign indicates their potential marketability to fashionistas, although it's not yet confirmed that they are navigable in stilettos.

Regardless, the skates have plenty to offer, including two hub motors on each that propel the user at speeds of up to 12 mph (19 km/h) for a range of six, eight or 10 miles (10, 12 or 16) depending on the choice of three models selected.

Because they operate without a third party remote control it is possible to turn them on just by strapping in and getting moving.

They can handle eight to 10 degree inclines, and are equipped with both electronic and mechanical brakes to provide maximum downhill control.

The charging time is between 1.5 and 2.5 hours, depending on the model, and both skates can be charged simultaneously.

They connect wirelessly to the ACTION app, which provides route tracking, interactive gaming for use with other skaters, and a dashboard which displays speed, battery level, and an odometer.

Available for pre-order for US$399, they have swept Kickstarter backers off their feet, raking in over $140,000, nearly 300% of the original $50,000 goal.

Shipping is expected for October 2014 and an extra fee of $100 is required for shipment outside the United States.
