An adventurous robot is preparing to hitchhike across Canada this summer, taking selfies and tweeting along the way.

Hitchbot is a research project designed to test out whether robots can trust the human species, and is the brainchild of Dr David Harris Smith of McMaster University and Dr Frauke Zellers of Ryerson University.

"Usually, we are concerned whether we can trust robots... but this project takes it the other way around and asks: can robots trust human beings?" say the pair.

Equipped with built-in GPS technology, a camera and 3G connectivity, Hitchbot will be able to flag down its own rides as it makes its way across the country, uploading photos and social media updates en route.

Far from being a slick high-tech machine, the robot's main body has been crafted from a beer cooler, and it can be recharged via a car cigarette lighter.

The little robot has already amassed over 1,000 followers on Instagram and almost 4,000 on Twitter.

Hitchbot will be starting its journey from Nova Scotia on July 24 and is hoping to hitch over to Victoria, British Columbia.
