As drones become increasingly common, one U.S. college has taken the bold decision to let students hire the airborne machines from the campus library.

The University of South Florida is launching the initiative this fall, and the move will allow students from a variety of departments such as engineering and environmental science to check out the drones.

Each of the high-end camera-carrying machines costs around $1,000 and can be 'driven' via remote control.

Talking to news network ABC Action News, college staff insisted that the machines would only be used for educational purposes, suggesting that architecture students could hire them to get an aerial perspective on sites and projects.

However, although drone users on campus will be heavily supervised by library staff, some students have expressed concerns about the safety and ethics of the initiative.
