If you love 3D printing but you're tired of making plastic fridge magnets, then a new accessory which shakes up the process could be for you.

"Discov3ry" is a universal extruder which attaches to desktop 3D printers and can be used to create objects with materials such as wood, silicone and even Nutella. Clay, ceramics, conductive paint and icing sugar are also on the list.

The extruder is compatible with all stepper motor based, fused deposition modelling (FDM) desktop 3D printer systems.

It works by forcing material out of reusable syringes, feeding it through a tube, and then through an extruder tip.

Both stiff and flexible materials can be combined to create more sophisticated designs.

The project has smashed its target on crowdfunding website Kickstarter and initial batches are expected to start shipping this September.
