Although pretty simple technically, this new feature should delight a host of users who love the animated format. Twitter has finally made it possible to use GIFs in tweets, with the feature available both on its website and on its Android or iOS apps.

Often highly expressive, these sequences can totally substitute for more conventional 140-sign tweets, to express an emotion, for instance. However, it is not yet possible to use GIFs in profile pictures.

GIFs are not automatically activated, however. Like videos, users will need to press play before they can enjoy the animation.

Here is a selection of some tweets that were shared Wednesday that took advantage of Twiiter's new functionality.
