A Norwegian army has been putting the virtual reality headset, Oculus Rift, to the test by helping soldiers drive tanks.

The prototype device is worn by the driver while a camera is placed outside the tank with its 360-degree feed going to the headset. The device is cheaper than conventional military camera systems but the picture quality is not yet clear enough for use in the field.

Project leader Major Ola Petter Odden says, "The concept is sound, but the technology isn't quite there yet. The picture quality is good for 10-15 metres - but after that it is difficult to distinguish details, for example whether an opponent is carrying a weapon."
