As part of its Q1 2014 financial earnings reporting, Twitter announced that it now has 255 million active monthly users. This means the social network picked up 14 million new users over the first three months of the year, indicating a growth rate of just 5.8%.
Twitter specified that 57 million of these regular users are in the US, compared to 198 million in the rest of the world. Each of these users updated his or her timeline 614 times per month on average, indicating that this metric remained relatively stable over Q4 2013.
However, investors were discouraged by the social network's shrinking growth rate in terms of gaining new active users, causing Twitter shares to decline on Wall Street immediately following the news.
Meanwhile, Facebook claims over one billion active users on mobile terminals alone.
