OTTAWA -- BlackBerry slashed 90 jobs from its Ottawa facility Tuesday in the latest round of corporate cuts inflicted on staff at the beleaguered smartphone maker.

"These employees were part of BlackBerry's product development and wireless technology teams," the company said in an e-mailed statement.

"We will do everything in our power to treat our employees with compassion, while offering support during this time of transition."

The company has been stricken by heavy losses and its recently-relaunched smartphone lineup failed to gain traction against the now-dominant iPhone and Android devices.

The cuts come after the company laid off 120 staff in Waterloo, Ont. -- home of the company's headquarters -- on Monday.

In September, BlackBerry announced that it would reduce its workforce by 40% as it struggles to once more turn a profit.

The company-wide staff reductions are supposed to be completed by May.
