The HV boasts some impressive specs and performance and is built to last, but does that really justify its $11,500 price-tag?

An ultra-luxury DSLR camera, Hasselblad's new HV not only uses premium materials such as titanium and aluminum in its construction, it even comes with tailored luggage.

And when it gets down to the business of actually capturing images, the results are extremely impressive, thanks to a 24.3-megapixel full-frame sensor that's just as at ease at capturing full-frame HD movies as it is stills. Then there's the Carl Zeiss 24-70mm lens that comes as standard.

As Hasselblad CEO Ian Rawcliffe explains: "The new HV is the latest model in our rapidly expanding portfolio of consumer cameras that seamlessly blend beauty and chic with performance. This camera is aimed squarely at people who don't just love taking pictures -- but love taking them in real style. And the HV doesn't just look good; it feels good to hold too."

However, peel back those premium metals and ignore the camera's super resin carrying case (complete with iPad compartment) and its specifications align with those of a Sony A99 DSLR, the camera on which it is based.

The A99 is an excellent pro-level DSLR and at $2799 it is significantly cheaper, even if that price excludes lenses or other accessories.

To put the Hasselblad's premium price into perspective, Nikon has just taken the wraps off its new flagship pro DSLR, the D4S, which offers everything that is currently at the cutting edge of digital imaging technology. It is so overflowing with features that even some professional photographers will never fully use everything it has to offer, yet it is expected to cost around $8500 when it officially goes on sale some time in February.

And although the pricing of the HV is questionable, it has to be said that when photographers move beyond 35mm and on to medium format imaging, Hasselblad still has very few if any true competitors, at any price. But the same can't be said in the DSLR space.
