The next-generation Apple tablet is now in production ahead of an autumn launch and thanks to a new display treatment, it will be easier to use outdoors.

According to Bloomberg, which has been speaking to the company's supply chain partners, the new screen treatment means that there have been production difficulties but that the tablet should be ready to ship either at the end of the third quarter of this year or at the beginning of the fourth quarter.

As usual, Apple has done a very good job of keeping leaks to a minimum regarding its upcoming products. However, as well as the reflective screen coating, we know that the 9.7-inch 'full size' iPad will also be getting the Touch ID fingerprint sensor that debuted on the iPhone 5S.

Bloomberg also reports that the new iPad Mini is getting ready to go into mass production, but there is no mention of a rumored 'pro' 12-inch tablet.

Tablet sales are starting to slow down and even Apple has not been immune to lower demand, particularly in the smaller 7-inch segment. Many research and analytics companies have said that 2014 will be the year that manufacturers start focusing on larger-screen tablets and on phablets in order to compensate for falling smaller-tablet sales.

In February Samsung launched a 12.2-inch Galaxy tablet for this reason and leaked images and benchmarking data suggest that Google has been working with HTC on an 8-inch tablet that will sit between the Nexus 7 and Nexus 10 devices it currently sells.

Bloomberg also seems to think that a new iPad will be unveiled on September 9, alongside the latest iPhone, although for the past two years, Apple has chosen to reveal new iPads at a dedicated event in October.
