Social media is often criticized for being ironically named. And as we spend increasing amounts of time absorbed by technology instead of enjoying face-to-face interaction, it's easy to see why.

However, an online trend reversal is underway. This week photographer Oscar Nilsson released a short film called From followers to friends that details the way Instagram is being transformed into a networking platform for creatives offline.

Set in and around San Francisco, the film documents different groups as they take part in Instawalks, or photography shooting trips, where they learn and inspire one another.

"You feel like you know these people so you want to link up with them outside of Instagram and that's where meetings like this come into play," says Instagrammer John Harris.

The concept isn't unique to San Francisco -- recently Instagram groups have sprung up in London, Singapore and Dubai.

Derivatives even include Instadogwalks for budding photographers and their pets.
