Microsoft has been sending out invitations to select members of the press this week, asking them along to "a small gathering" in New York on May 20, which many believe will see the unveiling of the long-rumoured Surface Mini.

The device is said to be a scaled-down 8-inch variant of the Surface, and those beliefs are strengthened by the fact that online retailer Amazon inadvertantly posted a listing for the device towards the end of last month. Suspicions were also raised when accessory creator Vostrostone announced that it was working on multiple accessories for the "Microsoft Surface Mini".

The original Surface failed to capture the imaginations of the general public, but it's successor, the Surface 2, fared much better thanks to a vastly improved advertising campaign and a decision for Microsoft to be clearer about what exactly the two variants of the device are capable of (the Pro version features a full Windows 8.1 installation, while the regular version is powered by a stripped back RT version of the operating system and is incapable of running regular standlone Windows applications).

A mini version of the tablet would definitely make sense, especially if it's going to reduce the price for consumers even more. However what we're really interested in learning is whether or not the device will feature an option for the full Windows 8.1 experience, or if it'll be restricted to RT.
