The Kickstarter campaign for Neil Young's hotly anticipated audiophile music player, PonoPlayer, has ended earning a whopping $6.2 million, making it the third biggest campaign in the site's history, behind only the Ouya Android gaming console ($8.6 million) and the Pebble Smartwatch ($10.2 million).

The device has been in development now for around two years, and took only a single day to earn its Kickstarter target of $800,000. Those who backed the campaign had the option of getting themselves one of the limited edition $400 basic versions of the device for a $200 contribution, a $300 black version of the device or a $4,000 version including laser engraved signatures for a host of famous bands like Metallica and Arcade Fire (and, of course, Neil Young himself).

Despite the fact that the Kickstarter campaign surpassed expectations, the company will now seek more investment for the HD audio player from regular investors in order to ensure the product hits its target of an October launch.

Concerns, however, have been raised that the lack of high definition audio availability could prove to be troublesome for the device, although a dedicated website, Pono Music, will seek to address that by offering users lossless audio files when the device launches.
