Facebook turns to Paper

The social network is moving into the news gathering and curation market with a new standalone app.

Looking to challenge apps like Flipboard, Paper is an iOS app that will pull news from your Facebook feed as well as from more traditional news reporting outlets and arrange them in a very aesthetically pleasing, image-led manner.

When setting up their newsfeeds, users will be able to pick from a host of categories including sports, food, design and science. And stories can be curated via LOL and Pop Culture too.

Based on interests and selections, the stories that appear in Paper are chosen by both human editors and by an algorithm and the app also offers users the chance to create and share their own stories with others.

As for advertising, Facebook says that, for now at least, the app will be ad-free but expect that to change in time.

The app will go live for U.S. users on Feb. 3, the day before Facebook's 10th birthday. There is currently no word on when it will be rolled out further afield. In the meantime, Facebook has provided a video tour to give potential users a sneak peek.
