The day when you can shop for a smartphone piece by piece may still be awhile away, but at least we can see it on the horizon now that Motorola has unveiled Project Ara.

Paul Eremenko, a member of the Project Ara Team, explained that "the design for Project Ara consists of what we call an endoskeleton (endo) and modules. The endo is the structural frame that holds all the modules in place. A module can be anything, from a new application processor to a new display or keyboard, an extra battery, a pulse oximeter - or something not yet thought of!"

Eremenko went on to reveal that Motorola has had Project Ara in the works for more than a year now and that they are now collaborating with Dave Hakkens, the creator of the PhoneBloks concept that sprung up just last week. Motorola announced that they will be inviting developers to start working on modules for the platform in the next few months, with the alpha version of the dev kit estimated to be available this winter.
