Its reputation for bombastic multiplayer action solidified, Borderlands returns for a third outing, this time at the hands of a new studio.
With Canberra studio 2K Australia given stewardship of the franchise on this occasion, Borderlands: The Pre-Sequel! will unite four unlikely heroes lifted from previous instalments -- and instill a bit of Aussie humour along the way.
In fact, it's Borderlands 2 villain Handsome Jack who is once again central to developments, although during his descent into manipulative madness.
Female assassin Athena (Borderlands expansion The Secret Armory of General Knoxx), Wilhelm the Enforcer (Borderlands 2), Sheriff Nisha (Borderlands 2) and perennial series sidekick Claptrap are set forth as this game's awesome foursome, working for an imprisoned Jack on Pandora's pockmarked moon.
As such, Borderlands: The Pre-Sequel! will introduce low gravity combat and dwindling supplies of oxygen to affairs, giving players a new dose of novelty for what appears to be another round of Borderlands-based mayhem.
The game is targeting releases on PlayStation 3, Xbox 360 and PC -- presumably to give main studio Gearbox the breathing space required for full-on PS4 and Xbox One development -- and a late 2014 ETA forms part of 2K's plans.
Before that, a portable PlayStation Vita edition of 2012's Borderlands 2 will be released the week of May 13 in North America and during the same month elsewhere; point & click adventure Tales of the Borderlands is in development at The Walking Dead studio Telltale Games, also projected for a 2014 release.
