A five-year-old San Diego native Kristoffer Van Hassel has managed to find a way through Microsoft's Xbox One security system, and nabbed himself four free games, a year's Xbox Live subscription and $50 for his troubles!
The young boy found a way to access his father's password-protected Xbox One account by entering nothing but spaces in a verification screen, potentially giving him the ability to run up huge bills by purchasing items from the Xbox store. Thankfully, though, he was smarter than that, and instead helped pass the information along to Microsoft who rewarded him for his sleuthing by giving him a several freebies and an official credit as a security researcher.
Microsoft issued a statement acknowledging the issue, and confirmed that it had been fixed immediately on discovery:
We're always listening to our customers and thank them for bringing issues to our attention. We take security seriously at Xbox and fixed the issue as soon as we learned about it
