Based on a wildlife documentary about the catastrophic effects of a microscopic fungus, video game survival drama The Last of Us is headed to the big screen.

Sony's wholly owned game studio Naughty Dog has become celebrated for its PlayStation 3 games Uncharted and, since June 2013, post-apocalyptic adventure The Last of Us.

The latter's character exposition has been particularly well praised, even if Ellen Page took exception to her likeness being used for main character Ellie.

That youngster, whose American life has been largely defined by abandoned cities grown over with vegetation, comes under the protection of tough survivalist Joel.

The two attempt to make their way across the States on a meandering route from Boston to Salt Lake City; lead designers Neil Druckmann and Bruce Straley took inspiration from The Road, True Grit and documentary The World Without Us.

Druckmann and Straley are joined by Naughty Dog presidents Evan Wells and Christophe Balestra on the creative side, reports Deadline.

Sam Raimi's Ghost House Pictures has been selected as a production partner by California-based distributor Screen Gems.
