"Battlefield 4" will be this year's annual release in the popular, team-based action series, and has been shown to GameStop's Chief Executive Officer, according to a message from the retail chain's Twitter account.

"Got to see Battlefield 4 today and all I can say is WOW! Thanks @EA for the sneak peek. Can't wait for you all to see it. ^CEO #BF4" read the February 19 tweet, referring to GameStop CEO J. Paul Raines.

The message was further authenticated by retweets from EA's OriginInsider, EA and Battlefield accounts.

It also coincides with a "Battlefield 3" sale on EA's PC game download service, the Origin store, which would help fuel interest in a direct sequel.

More significant than the existance of "Battlefield 4" is the tweet's timing, a day before Sony's long-awaited PlayStation 4 announcement on the eve of February 20 in New York.

Given that "Battlefield 3" and the PlayStation 3 enjoyed a preferential relationship, the expectation is that "Battlefield 4," primed for a new generation of consoles, may appear in some form during the PlayStation 4 presentation.
