The latest batch of Xbox 720 information ties in with previous rumours and indicates just how committed Microsoft is to seeing the next Xbox reinvented as not just a games machine but an all-around set-top box.

With Microsoft expected to formally announce its successor to the Xbox 360 this year, a system diagram posted by VGLeaks.com names a multitude of key components.

The diagram indicates that the Xbox 720 will be able to receive high definition signals from other devices via an HDMI 1.4 port, meaning that it could interpret output from a cable or satellite TV receiver.

If true, such a development only underlines Microsoft's desire to see the new console become central to home entertainment, be that TV, film, music, or games and fitness apps.

Also of significance is VGLeaks' assertion that a "High-fidelity Natural User Interface (NUI) sensor is always present," tying in to speculation that a voice and motion tracking device, dubbed Kinect 2.0, will be shipped as standard with every 720.

Many other details correlate with previous rumours, asserting that the 720 (codenamed Durango) will include a Blu-ray drive, 8GB of memory, an 8 core CPU chip, and a graphics processor that can run at 1.2 teraflops.

Previous rumours peg the PlayStation 4 (codenamed Orbis) as a more powerful machine, but power doesn't guarantee popular success -- after all, the PlayStation 2 was outmuscled by its contemporaries, the Xbox and Nintendo GameCube, but trounced them both in terms of global sales.
