Ushering in a new generation of console wars is the report that the PlayStation 4's measure of computational power stands at 1.84 teraflops, in comparison to the Xbox 720's 1.23 teraflops. But the under-wraps next Xbox will have up to 40 percent more memory, claims a report from VG247, which could hand the advantage back to Microsoft.

The Xbox 360 successor is cited as carrying 8Gb of memory, with 3Gb of that fenced off for use by its operating system, security system, and suite of apps.

In comparison, the PlayStation 4 is pegged at 4Gb of memory, with a 1Gb chunk allocated to its OS, security and apps.

The report also indicates that both entertainment units will be capable of reading high capacity 100Gb Blu-ray discs; both companies have corporate interests in the format.

VG247's sources, polled after the Consumer Electronics Show, name the Radeon HD 8770 graphics card as foundational for the Xbox 720, whereas earlier in the month a supposed leak from China implied use of the 8800 series -- both lines are due for introduction to the PC market in 2013.

Apart from that, and again, based on recent rumor and speculation, both machines appear to share a good deal in common, both being based on tech from AMD and IBM, without chips from Nvidia acting as differential as had been custom.

That could push the battlefield toward services such as video and TV on demand, music marketplaces, motion controls, video calling, and other social features, aside from the usual gamut of games: important factors all, given that Sony and Microsoft are now competing against Apple and Google in the entertainment stakes.
