Petraeus appears in 'Call of Duty: Black Ops 2'

Call of Duty: Black Ops 2.

"Secretary of Defense" David Petraeus is on board the "U.S.S. Barack Obama" in the year 2025 — at least, that's how the makers of Call of Duty: Black Ops 2 saw the future.

Just days after Petraeus resigned as director of the CIA because of an extramarital affair, gamemaker Activision released the latest incarnation of the popular war-themed video game in which he was imagined to be the U.S.'s top military man in 2025.

After the Tuesday launch, Activision felt duty-bound to issue an explanation.

"General Petraeus was not paid, was not involved in the creation of the game and has not been asked to endorse the game," the company said in a statement to the Wall Street Journal. "It is clear to game players that his character and others that are based on real-life figures are fantasy."

The decision to include Petraeus was made long ago, and the company said it wouldn't comment any further on the current scandal involving the general.
